BIOGRAPHY

I am a Professor of Classics in the Department of Classics and Archaeology in the University of Nottingham and a member of the Faculty of Archaeology, History, and Letters in the British School at Rome.

My research is located at the intersection of Roman literature and Roman history. Particular interests: Roman historiography of the late Republic and early Principate; the historiography of Roman legal and constitutional history; and the classical tradition, including the transmission of Latin texts, the editing and textual criticism of Latin texts, the scholarly genre of commentary, and the history of scholarship.

I took my undergraduate degree from the University of Western Australia and my doctorate from St John's College in the University of Cambridge. I have held academic appointments in Dublin (UCD), Munich (Thesaurus Linguae Latinae and LMU, where I was a Humboldt Fellow), Cambridge (as a University Lecturer), and Oxford (as a Visiting Fellow of All Souls College). I joined the University of Nottingham in 2009/10 and the British School at Rome in 2020/21.

I am a founding editor of the monograph series Trends in Classics: Key Perspectives on Classical Research published by De Gruyter.
